The Deep Forest Foundation has recently approved a new project application from the Associação Povos da Terra to build a place of learning in the village of Boa Vista which is located in the indigenous Alto Rio Jordão region of Acre, Brazil.
The center aims to create a unique space for the elders of the community and people with profound knowledge...
of plant medicines, indigenous traditions, history, and rituals to pass on their experience to new generations, teaching the young of their people to ensure that their unique skills and ancestral experience is passed down generations. It will also be a place where foreigners may be able to learn first hand about indigenous culture and traditions.
To accommodate the needs of the Boa Vista Village, which houses around 200 people and has close to 500 people (neighboring villages and foreign guests) during the time of their festival, the center will be quite a large construction. The implementation of this project is planned for late 2019 into 2020.
Project Goals

Communities from the Jordão and Tarauacá rivers will have the proper infrastructure to host their traditional rituals, festivities, gatherings, meetings, and tribal councils, uniting local villages and rescuing practices at risk of disappearance.

The structure will be used for capacity building events like the annual workshop of indigenous teachers in partnership with local government institutions, increasing its capacity and efficiency.

The Shubuã will be a symbol for Huni Kuin culture and spirituality, empowering local leaders and arousing youth attention and interest.

Through community-based ethno-tourism activities held at the spiritual and cultural center, any socioeconomic disparities between the Huni Kuin people and others in the local and national level will gradually decrease.

Elders from different communities will pass down their knowledge and experience to indigenous and non-indigenous groups in a space dedicated to traditional culture study and spiritual deepening.

The eco-friendly stoves will keep the kitchen well-ventilated and remove smoke and other by-products, which will decrease respiratory problems like asthma, pneumonia and bronchitis among women and kids. Due to the more efficient use of firewood, the environmental impact on nearby forests will diminish and the amount of time used to collect firewood and to cook will decrease.

The community will gain access to improved sanitation, promoting dignity, preventing transmission of diseases and reducing deaths of children aged under 5 years.

Waste Management will be recognized as a health issue and a plan will be established with the community, reducing the amount of waste inappropriately disposed.
